The Company We Keep

Written by Timothy Orikri on July 11, 2026

From the artist’s studio, I have come to see that our future is rarely shaped by talent alone. It is often influenced by the company we keep, the voices we entertain, and the relationships we nurture. Every brushstroke may belong to the artist, yet the atmosphere surrounding the canvas can either inspire its beauty or diminish its potential.

There is a mystery hidden within human association. Some people enter our lives carrying seeds of encouragement, wisdom, and growth. Their presence becomes a blessing, helping us see farther than our present circumstances. They challenge us to become more than we are and gently guide us toward the person we are meant to become.

Yet relationships can also carry another power. The wrong influences, unchecked habits, and destructive companionships may quietly redirect our path. What appears harmless today can become tomorrow’s burden. A careless word, a toxic friendship, or a misplaced loyalty may leave marks on our future long after the moment has passed.

Before you act carelessly or foolishly toward that soft soul, pause long enough to consider what may be at stake. Not every bridge can be rebuilt once it has been set ablaze. Not every wound heals without a scar.

The very person you dismiss today may have been destined to walk beside you tomorrow. The kindness you withhold, the respect you neglect, and the love you take for granted may become the missing stones of a future you hope to build.

Papa warned me, that sensitivity is not weakness but wisdom. Be mindful of your associates, your friends, your neighbors, and those whose voices occupy your heart. Every connection carries an influence. Every relationship leaves an imprint.

Within this mystery lies both blessing and curse: the people around us can either water the garden of our destiny or slowly drain its vitality. Therefore, be careful not to burn bridges that were meant to become pathways. Instead, build a formidable foundation for the future, one laid with grace, understanding, patience, and honor.

For while we cannot always control the winds that blow through our lives, we can choose how we treat those who journey with us, and in doing so, help shape the landscape of tomorrow.
